Assignment #2 (02/23/2008)

Q) Madonna gained her fame partially by having a risque look and by singing about things like virginity, pregnancy, and money. How do you view her as an artist in relation to Waters and Dylan, some of whose songs are, perhaps, more "serious"?

- She expresses her emotion and idea very directly than Waters and Dylan. No decoration, no exaggeration. Anyone can understand easily what she tried to say. Madonna deals with some specific social issues. On the other hand, Waters and Dylan's songs describe condition that cover the whole field of society and they usually use metaphoric way. Words have another meaning not just have original meaning. So we have to reveal hidden meaning of words. It is not easy for me.

  1. Hi Duhwan,

I like how you remind us that the styles of Madonna, Waters, and Dylan are so different. I agree that it's difficult to compare them. I wonder if it's easier for us to understand Madonna because she is the most contemporary. Dylan is recording now, too, but his audience is probably smaller. His newest album is supposed to be incredible!

  2. hey Duhwan,
You are right. Songs about polemics topics will be always a good way to find fame. However, no everybody can sing polemic songs, and to becomes successful. The performer has to be convincing.
You said that she expresses her ideas and emotions very directly. That is the key; the performer must have lived, or to be living what he is singing about.

  4. Hi Duhwan
Things are going to be mysterious when we cannot make sense of the original meaning. As for Madonna, she has made her music more glamouse for the reason she poured into more style and passion with her mind.So words we read are full of changes. We should make respectfor the singer and we can also find something can be easily understood.
